Jira Data Center HA in 4 weeks

If one server goes down and every team stops logging work, that is not an IT issue — it is a delivery risk. We move single-node Jira to a failover-tested Data Center cluster in four weeks, on-prem or in your private cloud.

20 minutes. You describe your current Jira; we tell you what a 4-week HA plan looks like for it. No slides.

What single-node Jira is costing you

Most teams only notice the risk the day it bites. These are the signs we hear on first calls:

One server, every team

Engineering, service desk and PMO all run on one JVM. A disk, patch or memory spike takes the whole company's work tracking offline.

Maintenance means outages

Every upgrade, plugin update or OS patch needs a weekend window, so upgrades get skipped and the instance drifts further behind.

Slow at peak hours

Boards, JQL filters and automation rules compete with API integrations on the same node. Users feel it at 10am and at sprint close.

Unsupported Server licence

Jira Server reached end of support in February 2024. No security fixes, no vendor support, and a growing audit question.

The 4-week plan we run

Fixed phases, written outputs at the end of each week, and a rehearsed cutover — not a best-effort migration.

Week 1
Assess & design

Inventory your version, apps/plugins, database size, attachments, integrations and custom fields. Check app compatibility with Data Center. Choose active-passive or active-active, node count and load balancer.

You get: target architecture, sizing, risk list, cutover plan and rollback plan.

Week 2
Build

Provision nodes, shared home, PostgreSQL with replication, and a load balancer with sticky sessions and health checks. SSL, SSO/LDAP, backups and monitoring wired in from day one.

You get: a working staging cluster that mirrors production.

Week 3
Migrate & prove

Restore a production copy to staging. Run UAT with your admins, re-index, and test apps and integrations. Then break it on purpose: kill a node, fail the database over, pull the shared-home path — and time recovery.

You get: failover test report with measured recovery times and a rehearsed cutover.

Week 4
Cutover & hand over

Go live in the agreed window, then hypercare. Alerts for node health, JVM, database lag and disk. Your team gets the runbook plus screen recordings of every routine task.

You get: a live HA cluster, runbook, recordings, and an optional 24/7 support plan.

What we build

A typical three-node active-active layout. For smaller teams we start active-passive on two nodes and scale out later without rework.

Active-passive or active-active?

  • Active-passive: simplest, lower cost, a standby node takes over on failure. Good first step.
  • Active-active: all nodes serve users, load spreads, and nodes can be patched one at a time.
  • Both need the same shared home and database design, so moving from one to the other later is a config change, not a rebuild.

How we measure it

Recovery, timed

Every node and database failover is tested in Week 3 and written up with measured recovery time. You sign off on numbers, not promises.

Zero SLA breaches

The workflow, alerting and support model are designed so that incidents are caught before they become breaches — that is the standard we run our managed support to.

Handover you can use

Runbook, recordings and a named contact. Your admins can restart, patch and fail over without calling us — and 24/7 support is there if you want it.

Questions IT directors ask first

Do we need a Jira Data Center licence for high availability?

Yes. Clustering is a Jira Data Center capability. Atlassian ended support for Jira Server in February 2024, so a single-node Server install is both unsupported and a single point of failure. We can run Data Center on one node first and add nodes when you are ready.

How much downtime is there during the move?

One planned cutover window, agreed in Week 1 and rehearsed in Week 3. Its length depends mainly on database size, attachments and re-indexing. After go-live, nodes can be patched one at a time, so most routine maintenance no longer needs a full outage.

Can it run on Windows and IIS?

Yes. We build on Linux or Windows Server, with IIS ARR, NGINX, HAProxy or your existing F5/cloud load balancer in front, configured for sticky sessions and node health checks.

Should we move to Jira Cloud instead?

Cloud suits many teams. Data Center is the better fit when data must stay in your own network or country, when the environment is air-gapped or regulated, or when you depend on custom apps and integrations that Cloud does not support. We will tell you which applies in the Week 1 assessment.

What do you need from our side?

A named Jira admin, access to the current instance and servers, the target VMs or cloud account, a Data Center licence (or trial for staging), and an agreed change window. We bring the design, build, test plan, runbook and handover.
